Intertidal zone
Apr 17, 2022
The intertidal zone refers to the land-sea transition zone. It is submerged by seawater at high tide and exposed at low tide. The intertidal zone in Kenting is of reef terrain. There are abundant organisms here and it is a natural classroom for us to understand the ocean.
Tides and organisms. The changes of tides are related to the relative positions of the earth, the sun and the moon. In Taiwan, tides rise and fall regularly twice a day. Therefore, the organisms in the intertidal zone are exposed to the air twice a day. Due to different degrees of tolerance to dryness and wetness of different kinds of marine organisms, the organisms will occupy different positions between the coasts, forming a special ecological environment.
1. Spray zone: Located at the highest and driest place, only sea spray can reach it.
2. High tide zone: Only submerged by seawater during high tide, and exposed to the air most of the time.
3. Mid tide zone: Part of the time is submerged by seawater and part of the time is exposed to the air during the day.
4. Low tide zone: It is the place with the most abundant moisture in the intertidal zone.
